 "Still Recovering"This is the first live music DVD I ever purchased. It is in large part due to the reviews here, but also to my familiarity with the Pat Metheny Group through the years. Not exactly a purist, but I've known the group to be simply outstanding in every case where I've purchased their music. I was able to view this DVD on a basic set up, with some serious amplification to the speakers but little in the way of video or audio enhancement. I am still recovering from the experience of watching this concert. The musicianship is nothing short of incredible. The dynamics range from whisper to roar and vice versa. (My kids at one point asked me to turn it down. Lo and behold, the band did it for me as if they were listening. Ha!) Time after time I expressed disbelief at the overall quality of performance and sound. My favorite parts are those where Lyle Mays is able quietly to lay down some of the most beautiful, "simple" piano solos. Being a drummer by trade I was also floored by Antonio Sanchez's solos which demonstrate a remarkable (to say the least!) independence between limbs. The beauty of having such a DVD is that one can enjoy the performance over again if one chooses, and do so without concern for tight seating, refreshment, and other necessities that make attendance at a live concert an inconvenience. Really. It's less than the price of a ticket to the real McCoy. I can't wait till I can see this on a real home theatre set up. The style of music may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I know a few people to whom I would recommend this DVD without reservation. Absolutlely. "Incredible!"Great DVD! Great show! Great musicianship! The best one out of all their DVD's! A must for the PMG fan! "Magical moments on a great DVD release!"I knew this was going to be a great DVD release as soon as the opening track started with Pat alone center stage playing a great song. The sound is great on this and the video production was superb. This DVD really makes me feel like I am at the show. I can't wait to listen to this in full surround (a future purchase!). Pat and his group always play well and they always give it their all for every performance. I think it was a good move on Pat's part to revamp his lineup even if it was inavoidable. Even artists like Pat can get too comfortable but he has no problem with exploring new avenues - even with his older songs! If you like Pat Metheny, this DVD is a must have. "Now THIS Is How To Do A Concert DVD!!!!"Prepare ye for a complex, multi-layered and appealingly melodious concert experience as you witness Pat Metheny and his able accomplices spin musical yarns that are as complex, varied and diverse as Creation itself!! Musically, this is some of Pat's most diverse and challenging music on display here, from a jazz-bossa-nova like "How Insensitive" to the whacked left-of-center avant-garde sensibilities of "Scrap Metal" and the tear-jerkingly beautiful "Map Of The World/In Her Family", you'll be spellbound amd amazed by how these musicians make playing such dense, complex music look and sound so effortless! Visually, the excellence matches the music, with ALL the musicians getting generous screentime. Pat himself is a bundle of energy who paces himself well, and only speaks when absolutely necessary, he's more the type to let the music do the talking. Highly recommended! Witnessing you live in concert in Vancouver, BC Canada in 2003 and 2005 has been a treat, yet watching you even closer on this outstanding concert DVD has been a delight, also. I had considered purchasing this DVD for a while, but the negative editorial from Sam G had deterred me. Thankfully, my lovely wife gave me the "Speaking of Now" DVD for my birthday March 4. Here's a little joke, and it's true: we just saw Pat in Vancouver Feb 25 performing his new album "The Way Up" (fabuloso!). Well, I had already purchased the tickets last November. At the beginning of February I told my wife that I was considering going to the US for a business related workshop Feb 25/26, when she replied: "Colin, don't you know that GOD is in Vancouver February 25th playing his guitar?" Well, if you don't have a chance witnessing God playing his guitar live in concert for you (and thousands others), this live DVD maybe just the next best thing. Enjoy! |
