Dead Leaves is the latest installment in the collaboration between Manga Entertainment and Production I.G. that brought viewers Blood: The Last Vampire (2001) and Kai Doh Maru (2003). But Dead Leaves, which suggests a mixture of Ninja Scroll and Inspector Zim designed by Peter Chung, lacks the sensual elegance of the earlier OVAs. Retro, who has a television set for a head, and Pandy awaken with their memories erased. Sent to the lunar prison of Dead Leaves, they contrive an escape with hordes of other inmates. A long, pointless slaughter ensues, with blood, bullets, and body parts flying across the screen. The frame is so cluttered with angular characters, bright colors, Japanese and English words, mechanical devices, and gore, it's difficult to follow the frenetic action, let alone the fragmentary story. (Unrated, suitable for ages 17 and older: brief nudity, extensive violence, profanity, sexual humor, toilet humor, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

"The greatest anime ever made!"
I first watched this film while coming up off four tabs of acid, and it was the greatest thing I've ever experienced. Amazing visuals set to jungle-icious music with non-stop action flying at you for the best part of an hour, a fantastic variety of cool and warped characters and a plot that parodies anime stereotypes and pushes them to the limit. Mutants, insane weaponry, criminals, cyborgs, genetic experiments, it's all here!

Now a lot of people may think that the storyline is a little patchy and confusing, but this is an intentional parody of often over-complicated anime plots. Anyway, the focus is on the beautiful, beautiful stylised animation that owes as much to American animation from the last 20 years as it does to Japanese.

I can't stress how good this film is, but it's more for the kind of person who watches manga films for the violence, comedy and vibrant animation than people who like intense plotlines, dark and moody drawing and the like.
Chances are that users of controlled substances are more likely to relate to this than others ;-)

"a japanese dedication to american animation"
you know the new wave of american animated tv shows like courage the cowardly dog, dexter laboratory and i am weasel.well ,this film has a similar character design.it disappointed me at first but thankfuly the anime style of directing, adolescence sense of humor, silly nudity and off the wall violence are still here.
the story is a bout two runaway amensia cases .a female with a panda make up on,pandy.and a tv headed male, retro.who in their search for their past run havoc across town, get arrested and sent to the deformed clones prison on the moon, dead leaves.and once they arrive there ,they continue their chaotic mayhem ride.helped by a line up of the weirdest characters i ever saw in an anime film ,so far.
its violent, fast, has a weak story, alot of mayhem fun and R rated.
even the dvd extras are R rated.where we see the director hiroyuki imaishi advising getting drunk before watching his film, if we want to really enjoy it.there are also a directer's commentary, festival interviews, truth or doubt game with some of the cast and the recording session.
and yes ladies and gentlemen,it does remind you of FLCL.
but is it that good? not really.
alot of fun? definitely.
a poster of the film is included in this dvd.on it's back there is a drawing of a police line up of some of dead leave's inmates.understandably chinko drillo is not there.

"Part good, part bad."
This show literally looks like a comic book exploding off the page, but the narrative is quite weak. We don't really care about the characters though the setting is very interesting. The level of unpleasant scatalogical humor is a bit much for me, but there are some genuinely funny and weirdly appealing scenes. As you can see, I'm pretty torn on this title. It's a hell of a lot of fun to watch but I can't seem to get past the things about it I don't like. It's sort of like a better-than-average segment from "Heavy Metal" exteneded over a 50-minute period. This is one of those rare 'watch and decide for yourself' titles.
Overall Grade: C

"ToOnified Dead leaves"
This animated movie is a must see.....!
Natural born Killers on a loOney ToonY Acid Trip!!!
FINALLY Japan is getting away from the same old, same old,
manga, Anime style!
Slap it in and DON'T BLINK!!!!

"Open your minds and get ready to take a ride"
What can you write about a movie that can be best described as indescrible? The best way to picture what you will see is to imagine a Ralph Bakshi (of the animated Lord of the Rings, Wizards, and fritz the Cat fame) film on speed. I am a big fan of animation films, with over 20 years of experince.

The animation is only the first layer of 100% original film. When the producer and director both claim at a premier of the movie in Japan.

Be warned this movie has incredibly violence. Their are more people being killed, guns fired, things blown up, and sex than any movie I can think of.
