"It would have gotten a higher rating . . . ."
I seriously think it was wrong of WB to cut so much of the Japanese version of this film to make the American version, and that is why this movie gets 4 stars and not 5. Because if I could see the ENTIRE, UNCUT movie I would undoubtedly love it more than I already do . . . and it would get six stars . . . but that's impossible since it can only have 5 stars . . . and it's definitely better than the Amarican version (so I've heard). So it only gets four stars =(. But if only I had not found out about the 'butchering' of this movie, I would give it 5 stars. So why such a high rating, when others give it a low rating? Because, the first time I saw it, I found myself thinking, "Wow. What a powerful movie." I was in a daze. I spent half that afternoon after I saw the movie wondering what would have happened if the Professor had used different words to tell Mewtwo about its birth. Plus, I LOVE movies and books about genetically engineered superior races . . . usually humans, but in this movie it was a Pokemon. AND, although it wasn't quite as romantic as the episode "Holy Matrimony!" (what COULD be?) it DID have cute scenes between Jessie and James. Also: another reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because of the soundtrack. One word: Why???? I have more to say . . . but basically, don't judge Pokemon because of its commercial-ness. The TV show is spectacular . . . and has unexpected twists (who would have thought there'd be an episode like the aforementioned "Holy Matrimony!"? Why did Tracey come in after Brock left? Does Tracey serve an unexpected purpose after the third Pokemon movie, or was he just a 'tour guide' and no more?)

"The best Pokemon movie"
Easily my favorite of the 3 movies, this first animated movie was much darker and brooding than the light-hearted television show. Mewtwo was by far the most menacing villain in any of the 3 movies. The plot was excellent as was the animation. It was a welcome sight to see the Pokemon (especially my favorite, Vulpix!) on the big screen. The story did get a bit heavy at times - even main character Ash temporarily "dies", but is brought back to life through the combined mystical powers of the Pokemon, which, in turn, teaches villainous Mewtwo a valuable lesson that life is a gift, not to be squandered. Good life lesson, great animation, great story, great Pokemon!

The short before the movie, "Pikachu's Vacation", maybe should have been shown after the feature (I think the Pokemon needed another vacation after that!), but it was cute. Those who do not follow Pokemon will probably be lost, as the Pokemon speak their own language (variations on their names). But again, for me, it was great to see Vulpix on the big screen so much!

My only complaint about the DVD version is that it is not in the widescreen format, thus cutting off quite a bit of the original picture. This was especially upsetting to me since Vulpix was in the corner of the screen a lot, and tended to get cut off more in the DVD version. Oh, well... maybe someday they'll make a special deluxe edition in widescreen. Until then, if you like Pokemon, get this DVD!

"Anime. Plus Cutesiness, Minus Animation and Plot"
Yuck! How did Pokemon hit it big!? The plot in this anime/animation floatsom is terrible! And it's like Once Upon A Forest, the message it gives out to little kids is hackyed, and the animation is terrible. And there are 4 sequels to it? Now that is just wrong!

"To extreme for some"
I love this movie. It's one of the best animated movies in exsitance. Those who give this movie few start and were strongly dissapointed are either very poor critics or didn't really pay attention to the film. The story is very powerful. A story about true equality in a world in which humans and animals are symbiotic with one another. Mewtwo is one of the best tragic villians ever put on screen. He is the Malcolm X of pokemon. Malcolm was extreme in his nature because the place and time demanded that he was. It's the same in this film for Mewtwo. Any self respecting human being would react in the same manner. The film takes kids, its target audience, through every emotional gamit possible. It also gives kids questions to ponder, serious life changing questions. In something so blatantly commercial as pokemon is, the filmmakers choose to point a very strong message admist all the advertisments. A very nice change of pace. Fans of pretty pictures in which stuff blows up without rhyme or reason should watch something else. This film is only for those who like substance with their anime. out alanS.

"THIS MOVIE IS THE BEST!!!!!!!"
THIS MOVIE WAS COOL!!!! THE FIRST TIME I WATCHED THE MOVIE, I WAS SUPRISED TO SEE MY FAVORITE CHARACTER, MEW. THE BEST PART WAS WHEN ASH WENT BETWEEN MEW AND MEWTWO AND WAS HIT BY THIER PYSCHIC BLASTS. POKEMON, BEING MY FAVORITE TV SHOW, I WOULD HAVE TO GIVE THIS MOVIE 5 STARS. PLEASE WATCH THIS MOVIE!!!!!
