The first installment in this new OAV series brings back the character of Jubei Yagyu, but not the artists or story line from the popular 1993 feature Ninja Scroll. A baroque mixture of samurai adventures, historic figures (Jubei and Shiro were real people), pseudo-Christian millenialism, and standard anime action, Resurrection is set at the close of the civil wars that led to the unification of Japan in the 17th century. Tokisada Shiro Amakusa is regarded as the Son of God by a group of Christians rebelling against the newly established Tokugawa Shogunate. Jubei tries to negotiate Shiro's surrender to end the rebellion, but fails. The resulting slaughter of Shiro's followers sets in motion a complicated plot involving a prophecy that if the new Savior is rejected, he will be reborn as Satan. Resurrection is exceedingly gory, even by anime standards: heads are split open, a violent rape ends in a bloodbath, a disemboweled warrior fights with his intestines flailing like tentacles, crows pick at cadavers. At a time when Hollywood films and TV shows are being blamed for youth violence in America, viewers may wonder why such bloody entertainments haven't produced real-life violence in Japan. --Charles Solomon

"hmmmmmm....ninja"
Hello, my name is ray charles and this is the best anime i've ever seen.actually, getting the box stuffed through my pepe is a more pleasant feeling. imagine getting raped with your bellybutton, and u begin to feel the pain of this movie. it's plot was actually not too shabby, if by not too shabby i mean a smoldering pile of s#!t!! and the ending, its like sex, a long hard arduous journey, and just when you think thinks are going your way, nothing happens. seriously tho, if u feel the need for some great anime with a lot of gore, watch hellsing, at least that didnt have a disgusting rape scene that violated all my moral principles. and ...snake, SNAKE SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKEEEEE

"Good, but one SLIIIIIIIIIGHT problem..."
The series is incomplete. Sales of "Hell's Spawn" were not massive in Japan, so...the series was cancelled. That's a shame, because it had so much potential as being one of the goriest long-running anime works. The art is pretty bad, honestly speaking, but the gore in the film is so elaborate and intense that I rented the first volume and turned it off midway...but I was only 11 at the time, and it was when I saw people get their upper mouth chopped off. The violence is so graphic, someone just may vomit if they are squeamish enough. The plot is not great, and it is also somewhat difficult to follow. The story jumps around from time to time, but it is not completely pointless. The dubbing is not great either, but I can deal with it. The music is beautifully composed. The sounds of slaughter are typical anime fare. Initially, ADV strapped a small tag on the upper right hand corner of the first VHS tape that read, "FOR VIEWERS 18 AND OVER ONLY." Well, I saw this in a magazine advertisement, and I thought, "Wow, this must be some pretty intense stuff," but I was only 9 or 10. Now, they just give their highest age rating for appropriateness (a good move, in my opinion). It could have been much better had it not been cancelled. The gore is so intense, you just may not look at anime the same way ever again.

"Some things should not be resurrected"
If you are hard-headed like me, and choose to ignore all negative reviews related to Ninja Resurrection, then I *strongly* recommend you watch the original Ninja Scroll immediately after this hot mess. Why? Because you will need to purge your mind of the sub-par animation, insulting plot, and cheesy dialogue. Some reviewers have words about the Christian struggle portrayed in the movie (if it can be called that). According to history of the faith in Japan, what's portrayed in Resurrection is tame. But, that's beside the point. What IS the point is that this hot doo-doo mess should have never been made, let alone written.

That is NOT Jubei; jeez, he doesn't even use his fighting technique that's EVERYWHERE in Ninja Scroll and in the anime series (which is far better than Resurrection could ever be). This was so insulting and infuriating to watch. Please don't be stubborn like the rest of us; save yourself a purchase and/or a rental, and preserve the coolness that is the Ninja Scroll classic.

"A nice feudal anime"
ok people, let's get things straight. THIS IS NOT THE NINJA SCROLL SEQUEL!!! this is a different jubei, a different time setting, and a different stroyline. about the storyline, it is just so damn spacious!!! at some points, i couldn't tell what the hell was going on until i watched it over and over. let me tell you somethin, though, the fighting scenes are cool, but the blood is a little transparent. being brought back to life throught sex is very interesting as well. the problem that mainly concerned me was the ending!!! want to know what i'm talking about go buy this movie.

"Good...If you're tired and dont have a brain"
i saw this, like many other people, shown as the sequal to ninja scroll (an amazing movie and well worth buying). what i got was not as expected so i thought it was tripe after seeing it. well i then looked at it in it's own merits. one problem, there wern't many. slow plot, poor fight scenes and needless sex (does than annoy anyone else?). well, i gave it two stars because it HAS got a storyline and some good scenes. not one to rush out and buy though.
