Inspired by "Gulliver's Travels," the fantasy-adventure Castle in the Sky (1986) was Hayao Miyazaki's third feature, and helped to establish his reputation as a visionary in both Japan and America. The orphan Sheeta inherited a mysterious crystal that links her to the legendary sky-kingdom of Laputa. With the help of resourceful Pazu and a rollicking band of sky pirates, she makes her way to the ruins of the once-great civilization. Sheeta and Pazu must outwit the evil Muska, who plans to use Laputa's science to make himself ruler of the world. Castle echoes elements in Myazaki's earlier Nausicaä, and anticipates imagery in his later films, from My Neighbor Totoro to Spirited Away. Disney's new English dub, which features Anna Paquin (Sheeta), James Van Der Beek (Pazu), and Cloris Leachman (pirate matriarch Dola), is lively and close in tone to the original Japanese, if a bit talkier. The exciting flying sequences, appealing characters, and fantastic vision of a steam-powered future Jules Verne might have imagined make Castle in the Sky a must-have for fans of Japanese and Western animation. (Unrated: suitable for ages 10 and older: violence) --Charles Solomon

"Nice Movie..but not better than Spirited Away"
When i ordered this dvd i was expecting a world of fantasy with interesting characters that are not human like in the movie spirited away. the only non human character was a robot that lived in the castle in the sky. When you read the title you would be expecting the movie to start at least somewhere in the beginning in the castle, but the fact is.. You get to see the characters reach the castle in the sky at the almost end of the movie. The pirates in this movie are the ones that got me laughing. It was a magical movie where the castle floats in the sky but didn't quite movie me as spirited away.

"A lovely movie"
So sweet and funny, well drawn and well written. A delight to watch.

"Another great Miyazaki film "
Although Princess Monoke is still our family favorite, we also enjoy Castle in the Sky. Miyazaki films are all incredible. The animation is beautiful, the story is sophisticated yet my 3 and 5 year old children love all of his films.

"Among the very Best!"
THis still has to be one of my absolute favorite movies and I'm 14! The animation and story are gorgeous and magical and the music score (my favorite) is breathtakingly phenominal!
The story is about a young boy named Pazu who discovers a gril with a strange necklace floating down from the sky one evening. Soon they are chased by both the government and pirates who want the girl (SHeeta)'s necklace because it contians a stone from the mysterious floatin isle of Laputa. BUrsting with excitement and an unexpected plot this is a fantastic piece of work.
My particular favorite character was Musca, the villian of the story. He was portrayed perfectly by Mark Hamil (Luke SKywalker from Star Wars) and has to be one of the best villians I have ever seen!
Overall, I recommend this to anyone who loves Miyazaki's work. By far this is his greatest achievement ever!

"Castle in the Sky is a good movie."
Sorry: I'm not that good at titles. I'm seen a few of Miyazaki-San's films, and this one is by far my favorite. I find the concept of a once-powerful, but now long dead, ancient culture particularly intriguing, but I won't say any more along those lines for fear of spoiling the plot. The movie starts off rather, ah, interestingly, with the main charchter seemingly plunging to her doom. This, however, is only the start of a remarkable chain of events that eventually leads to the satisfying conclusion. Along the way we meet some unforgettable characters and, in true Miyazaki style, there is even a giant (and I mean giant) tree. I give this film 5 stars for the above reasons and would recommend it to anyone between the ages of 8 and 80.
