The search leads them to the hidden plateau where the redoubtable Mewtwo has established a haven for the cloned Pokémon from the previous film. The evil Giovanni is plotting to recapture Mewtwo and renew his efforts to create an army of bio-engineered Pokémon. Aided by the reluctant Meowth, Ash and his friends defeat Giovanni and his henchman in a battle that is less over the top than the original feature but more intense than the program's usual adventures and lessons in sportsmanship. The result is a mildly amusing, not particularly involving film. Mewtwo's angry brooding and some of the action may be too scary for very small children.  "Should be viewed in original language to appreciate."Anyone who says the movie has a bad score, I agree. This is because when the Americans dubbed the film, they also dubbed the soundtrack. If you watch the film in its original language, Japanese, then you'll see how different the music is. The American companies always do this when they dub anime so that's why it's best to watch anime in Japanese. For this film, it is an excellent saga of Team Rocket's struggles to find power amongst the government in Johto. You'd have to be an avid fan to be able to appreciate it too. "Mewtwo Returns?! About TIME he came back!!"I absolutely LOVE this movie. It's really good, and even though the sidetrack was recycled from the first movie, it still really fit the situations. In the plot of this movie, Giovanni, the evil deranged head of Team Rocket, locates Mewtwo, whom he had cloned from the DNA of the legendary Pokemon Mew. Mewtwo is living in a secluded canyon in Johto with his super-cloned Pokemon, so Giovanni decides to go there and make Mewtwo's life miserable. As fate would have it, however, Ash and the other good guys--and, inevitably, Team Rocket--are going there at the same time. At some point, Jessie, James and Meowth of course try to steal Pikachu, but the scheme goes awry, and Meowth and Pikachu decide to help out Mewtwo, alongside their clones. (I like it when Team Rocket helps out.) For some reason, many people seem to have major beefs with Mewtwo Returns, but then again, in most cases these are the same people who complain about any anime that is dubbed into English. If you like Pokemon, if you like Mewtwo, and if you liked the first movie, you have absolutely GOT to get this one. I've memorized the whole thing now because I like it so much. ^_^  "Should have never been made"Boy oh boy, this is quite a deceiving title. Mewtwo Returns would imply to most fans a revenge type story pitting Mewtwo once again as the antagonistic aggressor. Such a plot probably would've made for quite an enthralling sequel to the original. Conversely, this one runs off in the opposite direction, one which places the once invincible Mewtwo in a helpless position, as it attempts to resume a (since the end of Mewtwo Strikes Back) peaceful lifestyle with its clone buddies. The evil doer in Mewtwo Returns happens to be Giovanni, the malicious, and cruel leader of Team Rocket. Where to begin with the faults of this movie? For starters, the Pokemon creation team seemed to have forgotten what an omnipotent wrecking machine they portrayed Mewtwo as in the first movie. It's not the newfound pacifist-molded ideology which Mewtwo holds that bothers me with this movie, it's more the weakness in which it seems to have suddenly been infected with. The most powerful of all Pokemon is now a playtoy at the mercy of Giovanni's high tech mechanical contraptions. If you're expecting to see the same Mewtwo as the one in Mewtwo Strikes Back, the one who could stir typhoons with the simple flick of its wrist, you're going to be gravely disappointed (as I was). A plot of technological inventions overwhelming powerful Pokemon can be executed successfully in some circumstances (as was witnessed in the fantastic Pokemon 2000, with the incarceration of Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno through mechanical means), yet it bothers me when it's done to an intelligent, Godlike specimen such as Mewtwo. It undermines Mewtwo's entire character to the point where he loses much credibility in the power department. The idea of Jessie and James helping Ash and the gang in yet another movie is not only moldy by this point, but absurd when considering that it's in defiance of their own boss, Giovanni. The overexposure of Giovanni is another issue I have a problem with. The face of Team Rocket's founder is probably shown more in this movie than it is in all the Pokemon TV episodes combined, taking away from the mystery of his character. This is the worst Pokemon movie yet, one which the world of Pokemon would've done better off without.  "My favorite of the Pokemon movies."Even though Suicune is a favorite pokemon of mine, 'Pokemon 4ever' just wasn't quite good enough overall to be my favorite movie. The third film contained a memorable song by Innosense, but again, one song wasn't enough. And Pokemon 2000 included some good Team Rocket content. But the best pokemon movie, in my opinion, is 'Mewtwo Returns.' The story is still rather basic, with Giovanni being the main villain and Ash & company being the heroes, along with Mewtwo and all the other pokemon, genetically enhanced clones or not. Yet there are some very poignant messages brought forth by the movie, and the animation is quite nice, not appearing to have been tossed together quickly without care. This movie might have been a direct-to-video job, but it was a great one. Ash finds himself worried that a source of miraculous water with healing powers will be discovered and ruined. Mewtwo struggles to resist capture and having his spirit broken by the ruthless Team Rocket leader Giovanni. And the rifts between cloned pokemon and 'normal' ones are explored and eventually smoothed over. What makes this movie most enjoyable for me is the introduction (and sadly, the first and only meeting) of a new Team Rocket agent, young Domino, aka the Black Tulip, agent 009. Multi-faceted and brilliant as Cassidy, whom she slightly resembles (blonde with violet eyes), Domino is a character who adds interest and fun to the film. She seems like a perfect little Swiss girl (with that swirly hair, clothes that match the colors of the Swiss flag, & a convincing portrayal of a hiker, the way she looks like she could be in a lodge wearing a green L.L.Bean sweater...not to mention that we don't know her real name. Domino suggests Dominique, which is French & thus potentially associated with Switzerland). But she turns out to be one slick Rocket agent. I would go with 'Mewtwo Returns' if I had to pick one pokemon movie to see. You still need to be a pokefan to enjoy it, but it's the most well-done. "It's Pretty Cool"It's Pretty Cool. It's Way Better Then The First One. I Seen It Before In The Movie Theater With Some Of My Friends. And I Was Just Blown Away By It. (and between you and me i think that Giovanni Reminds me so much of Alistar Crane from the daytime soap oprea "Passions" (the soap oprea not the moive that Mel Gibson Derectied) let's just say it's our little secret ok). So I Would Like Everyone To Buy This Movie. It's Truly A Must Have For Any Die Hard Pokemon Fan. |
