Based on a series of fantasy novels by Hideyuki Kikuchi, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is a bloody anime adventure. Set in the distant future, the story focuses on D (voice by Andrew Philpot), the son of a vampire and a mortal who has dedicated his life to exterminating vampires. D is pursuing Charlotte (Wendee Lee), who has been carried off by vampire Meier Link (John Rafter Lee). The bounty-hunting Markus brothers and tough-talking Leila (Pamela Segall) are also on the trail. A long, violent chase brings them to the Castle of Carmila the Bloody Countess (Julia Fletcher), where the narrative founders in a series of confusing illusions that lead to an inconclusive ending. Bloodlust looks better in still images that evoke Yoshitaka Amano's intricate illustrations than it does in motion. The very limited drawn animation clashes visually with the more fluid computer-generated imagery--D's cape billows dramatically, but his expression rarely changes. Fans of such violent anime features as Sword for Truth and Ninja Resurrection will enjoy the no-holds-barred action sequences, but more squeamish viewers will be put off by the beheadings, impalements, disembowelments, etc. Vampire Hunter D, an earlier, more modest feature based on the same material, is a better adaptation. --Charles Solomon

"Excellent Movie, DVD "Quirks" (4 stars)"
Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust is visually more stunning than the original Vampire Hunter D. The story too is far more impressive than the original. Both seem to be unrelated outside of the fact that the star of both shows in D, the parasite in his hand and his horse (to some extent). There have been many other excellent reviews about the show itself and thus this review will focus on some of the "quirks" of the DVD.

The first and major "quirk" is with the sound of the actually movie. There are times that the dialogue/conversation is way lower than the background sounds. Which means that at times you may find yourself raising the volume to hear the characters speak and then rushing to lower it again as the background sounds kick in, especially concerning explosions and screams. As pointed out in another review this may have been done for effect or to set the mood. It does however take a little away from the overall experience of the movie.

Which leads into the second "quirk". Unlike other anime DVDs there are no language options. This DVD has only English audio, no Japanese audio and no subtitles. The sound "quirk" may not have been such an issue if subtitles were available to compensate for the volume.

Other than these two "quirks" the DVD has the standard fare of extras such as trailers and a behind-the-scenes featurette.

By all means do not let these "quirks" prevent you from getting this DVD. This anime is an excellent addition to any collection or a great introduction to the world of anime.

"equally superior to the first despite the sound quality"
Wow! This sequel to Vampire Hunter D took 15 years to arrive though I didn't mind that much because I didn't see the original until a year before Bloodlust came out. Was the long wait worth it? You bet! You will be able to tell that the animation is a bit different but it doesn't take away from the overall movie. While not quite as dark as it's predecessor, Bloodlust has some creepy moments and is probably more of an action flick which is not a bad thing. As with the first, this sequel is not a typical vampire film and is sure to please fans of the original and even new comers to anime. As for the DVD, the special features are somewhat plentiful. Very nice picture quality but as for the sound quality... Ugh! The sound between the dialouge and the music during the film are so unbalanced that you will find yourself having to turn the volume very high to understand everything being said and other times you will have to turn the volume lower due to a sudden burst of music right after a character's spoken dialogue. While watching this movie, I suggest you keep the remote in your hand for volume adjustment. Other than the sound problem, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust is certainly worthy to be seen more than once as is the original.

"the flesh of blood"
This second film is set 2000 years after the first film which would be in the year 14,090 A.D. Bloodlust.

Vampires are dwindling breed, and one of the last, Meier Link, has kidnapped Charlotte, a human girl. Her father hires D to find her. He also hires the Markus brothers. Borgoff, the leader of the group, battles using a special repeating cross bow that he swears will glow.

"Vampire Hunter D goodness!"
Ah, yes, Vampire Hunter D-Bloodlust. This is an excellent movie to watch, and it's one you'll want to watch multiple times just because it's so good looking! Done in 1993, this is one of the best-drawn/animated movies I think I'll ever see in my entire life! The basic plot is that Vampire Hunter D is the son of dracula and a human mother, called in the movie a Damphir(pronounced:Dam-peal), he has been hired to return a wealthy family's daughter, Charlotte, to them, from the clutches of the vampire Meier Link, but he's also got some competition, the Marcus Brothers. Eventually, D finds out that this same woman is actually in love with Link, and they're trying to escape into space by way of a rocketship owned by Carmilla, a ruthless tyrant vampiress. It's a very good story once you hear all of it, but in general, this is one of my favorite movies, and if you like vampires, werewolves, gouls, or anything pertaining to such previous subjects, this is a movie you'll want to see. This movie does have blood/death and is not necessarily suited for a younger audience.
